'The Story Of' is a web series dedicated to small but special tales from Celtic’s illustrious history. Here, we recall Barry Robson’s first touch as a Celtic player.

JAMES Forrest, Callum McGregor, Gary Hooper, Georgios Samaras, Alan Thompson, Chris Sutton, Neilly Mochan – these are just a few of the Hoops stars who’ve scored on their Celtic debut throughout the years. The full list is extensive, but few can claim they did so with the first touch of their career in green and white.

However, Barry Robson can. Brought on by Gordon Strachan as a second-half substitute against Aberdeen on February 10, 2008, the combative midfielder repaid his manager by firing a free-kick beyond the wall and into the net, to put Celtic well out of sight in a comfortable 5-1 win on the road.

Signed on deadline day just over a week earlier, Robson joined from Dundee United and played a key role in the Hoops’ string of league wins towards the end of the campaign that led them to three in-a-row – Gordon Strachan becoming the first manager to do so since Jock Stein decades before.

“The fans were chanting my name and Aiden was joking that he was going to get Naka back off the bench to take the free-kick,” Robson told the Celtic View at the time. “But I just stepped up and tried to find the corner. I did that and it was a good goal.

"Of course, I’m delighted that I scored on my debut, but I know that’s not going to happen every week. I just need to keep trying to do well and work hard for the team.

“It was a dream start, but the most important thing for me was the win and the performance,” he continued. When I was coming on, the manager just told me to go and play my normal game and enjoy it. I felt I did that and it was good to play my part in the win.

“It makes it easier when you are playing with great players. As for the goal, I didn’t feel any pressure when I was stepping up. I was naturally delighted when it went in.”
