The Staggering Cost Behind Celtic’s Decision to Trigger Contract Clause

It seems strange in hindsight the club and Neil Lennon triggered an extra year in his Celtic deal to keep the player at Parkhead this season.

His new contract has been running since July 1st and if we take the widely reported £1.7m figure we can estimate it’s cost Celtic £5837 per minute so far this season.

It’s not so strange if you subscribe to the theory Celtic triggered the wingers £1.7m per year contract [according to Sunsport] just so they could get a fee for the player before the window closed.

Financially, how costly has their decision to trigger Sinclair’s contract been?

Will Neil Lennon bring the experienced midfielder back or will he be exiled until January in the hope they can recoup the money they’re paying out for Scott until the end of December?

As it transpired, Scott Sinclair was left out of the Cluj side as there was interest in the player from the Premier League right before their window closed.

It looks like Celtic’s gamble on punting Sinclair this summer hasn’t paid off and has come back to bite a board who should be treating the player with a bit more respect.
