IT was on this day in 2011 that Neil Lennon lifted his first trophy as Celtic manager – the 2010/11 campaign’s Scottish Cup.

Having taken over from Tony Mowbray as interim boss in the final stretch of the previous season, the Irishman fought hard in the league but would have to wait one more year to clinch the first of the current incredible nine-in-a-row run.

In the Scottish Cup, however, there was no such delay when a convincing 3-0 win over Motherwell returned Scotland’s oldest trophy to Paradise. Goals from Charlie Mulgrew, a Stephen Craigan own goal and a wonderstrike from South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng on the day saw the Hoops overcome the Steelmen with confidence and flair.

“It was more for the gaffer than anybody else, as I think what he’s went through for the whole season – well no-one else in Scotland has ever gone through that before,” said Scott Brown of his manager in the wake of the cup win.

“The manager has kept his promise of bringing back the thunder to Celtic Park and he has taken that a stage further as Hampden also experienced the thunderous backing of a Celtic crowd willing the team on.

“No matter where we’ve been, what the score is or who we are playing, the fans have been behind us 100 per cent. We love their support, we love their songs and that’s what matters.”

“Hopefully winning the cup kicks us off for next season. We were disappointed not to win the league and we were a bit gutted during the week but we managed to get up for the final and we produced at the end of the day.”

The following season, Celtic did win the league title. They did so again for the following eight after that. And they’ve shown little signs of stopping now.
