Edwin van der Sar has been appointed as the European Club Association’s vice-president, in a move that could be a boost for Celtic’s Champions League hopes.

According to the Daily Record, the former Manchester United man will be the ECA’s vice-president behind Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, while Celtic’s Peter Lawwell will also be on the committee.

So what does this mean for Celtic?

Van der Sar’s appointment as ECA vice-president could be a benefit to Celtic, given how the former goalkeeper has worked alongside the Hoops and Copenhagen on a proposal to make the Champions League a fairer competition.

However, the current Ajer chief executive officer looks set to become the new technical director at Manchester United in a move that could see the Dutchman prioritise the Red Devils and overlook the proposal’s worked on with Celtic and Copenhagen.

Furthermore, according to the report, ECA chairman Agnelli has claimed the committee will act “in the interest of all European clubs” when considering changes to Europe’s elite competitions.

So while Van der Sar’s appointment could benefit Celtic, should he look to push the proposal to make the Champions League a fairer competition for smaller sides, it could also swing the other way should he move to United.
