The former Celtic midfielder said he was ‘angered’ when he heard the player was offered vastly reduced terms to stay put.

Commons, who starts his rant by saying Celtic look like they’re closing in on a deal for Fraser Forster, then claims Celtic should have pulled out all the stops for Craig Gordon is so far wide of the mark.

If Celtic do land Fraser Forster, there’s no real need for Craig at the club. There is a lack of understanding of Craig’s place in the team and the fact he never played a single league game for the club last season. Bain was preferred until he got injured then Forster came in and made the slot his own.

Commons appears to subscribe to the thought Celtic should offer player’s deals based on sentimental reasons – that has burned us before.

Martin O’Neill famously gave big contracts to his ageing stars who would play a lesser role in the team. When Martin left, Celtic were stuck with a lot of big deals to pay for players who weren’t getting game time.

Peter Lawwell was the chief exec then too, and from the way we’ve seen the likes of Lustig and Hayes moved on – it appears as if it’s made him ruthless.

Here is Common’s full rant to RecordSport:

“I believe they’re getting close to signing (Fraser) Forster. But they should have made a bigger effort to hold on to (Craig) Gordon.“I was really angered by Gordon being offered reduced terms. He’s 37, not 45, and he’s been one of the best if not the best goalkeepers in Scotland over the past decade.“If Celtic had been definitively ruled out of the running for Forster, I wouldn’t have had any hesitation in handing him the No 1 jersey.

“He clearly feels he needs first-team football to reclaim his Scotland place and, if Forster is coming back, he won’t get much of that at Celtic Park.“Gordon’s departure now makes it more important than ever that Celtic push the boat out to get Forster back.“For me, it’s just typical Celtic. They’ve always had this knack of trying to get players as cheap as possible, without bursting the bank.“When you’re on the verge of ten in a row, you have to go that extra yard.”
