Former Manchester United goalkeeper and current Ajax chief Edwin van der Sar has hit out at UEFA regarding the current Champions League procedure, the Daily Record report.

And former United shot-stopper van der Sar recently hit out at UEFA, claiming sides like Celtic and Ajax should be rewarded for their continued success in their respective countries.

Should Celtic have to qualify for the group stages?

Despite winning the Scottish Premiership, Celtic have to earn their place in the Champions League group stages, similar to Dutch giants Ajax.

Leading clubs from mid-sized associations, like Celtic, FC Copenhagen or Ajax, should not be solely dependent on the position of their association in the UEFA Country Ranking, but also be rewarded for their own performance, both domestically and in the European club competitions.

If Celtic advance past FK Sarajevo, the Hoops will still have to get through three two-legged ties to book their spot in the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition.

The Hoops defeated Bosnian side FK Sarajevo 3-1 in the first leg of their first-round qualifier, with the return leg taking place at Celtic Park on Wednesday.
