CELTIC Reserves suffered defeat in today's (Monday) Glasgow derby after Tommy McIntyre’s side lost 2-0 to Rangers at Firhill. Glenn Middleton opened the scoring on 52 minutes, and doubled his side’s lead in second-half stoppage time to secure three points for the visitors.

The Hoops got off to a great start when Ewan Henderson slipped a neat through ball into the path of Mikey Johnston, who, in turn, teased his man before firing wide of the target. Minutes later, a well-worked corner from Rangers was ultimately cleared to safety by Daniel Church at the other end.

On the 10-minute mark, Johnston turned provider for Henderson when he fed a smart nutmeg through the legs of his opponent, though Henderson sent a shot fizzing just wide of the far post.

Just before the half-hour, Hoops stopper Ryan Mullen was called into action on a couple of occasions, before Karamoko Dembele and Armstrong Oko-Flex combined in the opposition penalty area. Rangers blocked the resulting shot, and immediately countered, before Mullen matched Cameron Palmer’s drive at goal.

On 38 minutes, Barry Coffey was unfortunate not to convert a pinpoint cross from Anthony Ralston, and both sides went into the break goalless.

The visitors then took the lead through Middleton on 52 minutes, who could have doubled his tally shortly afterwards, had it not been for the heroics of Mullen in goal.

The Hoops introduced both Jack Aitchison and Ross McLaughlin for Oko-Flex and Coffey respectively after the hour mark in a bid to introduce more attacking options, but they struggled to get a foothold on possession in the final third.

Both Johnston and Henderson created half-chances for the hosts in the closing quarter of an hour, but Rangers keeper Andrew Firth prevented their advances. As the game entered its closing minutes, Tommy McIntyre’s men pressed deep into the opposition half, but were caught on the break by a well-worked counter-attack, capped off again by Middleton.

Disappointment for Celtic on the day, as Rangers overtake the Hoops on goal difference at the top of the SPFL Reserve League table. Both teams have one game of the campaign left to play, and a further game in hand.
